Heritage Conservation has become one noted area of specialization for Simpson Roberts. We are recognized in both the public and private sectors as a competent resource for the skills and precision required of historical architecture. This work is under the direction of Lorne Simpson who has received a Masters degree in Historic Building Conservation from the British renowned Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, in York.
Our firm has completed work on two hundred historic structures located in Southern Alberta since 1986. This includes exclusive involvement with the Alberta Mainstreet Programs in Medicine Hat, Drumheller, Claresholm, Inglewood (Calgary), and Didsbury. We have conducted Quinquennial studies for several of Calgary's downtown historic sandstone churches and have rehabilitated 21 significant structures in Calgary's historic Stephen Avenue Mall district. Our range of expertise includes historic building inventories and condition assessments to building rehabilitation, planning and interpretive exhibit design. Since 1986 Simpson Roberts has become a recognized leader in the design of Computer and Control Centres. These projects involve the construction of buildings designed to function in hostile environments with high ambient H2S levels and potential blast over pressures ranging from 1.5 psi to 10.1 psi dynamic. In addition, these control facilities are designed to provide the very high standards of pressurization and humidity required in most process control environments.
Simpson Roberts' experience in the design and construction of blast resistant control facilities is extensive. In addition to computer software that allows us to model predicted blast over pressures and design many building components (including window systems to 10 psi blast over pressures), we utilize research information received from the National Research Council of Canada, the Department of National Defense, the Manufacturing Chemists Association, the U.S Navy along with insurance company reports of actual plant explosions. Because of this experience, we also understand how the functional relationships within a control facility must respond to the requirements of a blast resistant structure.
Along with actual models, the use of 3D computer modeling has become another important tool in the design of efficient, visually pleasing control rooms. This capability allows our clients to review the complete control room design in finite detail before construction ever begins. We find this a very effective tool in communicating our ideas with our clients.
